  4. I know that file is here somewhere!
  5.  
  6. If you are like most PC users you start out with a small collection
  7. of floppy disks, including those that came with your PC when you
  8. bought it, like DOS and Windows distribution disks. You also
  9. probably thought that you could never fill your hard disk!
  10.  
  11. As time passed you started to collect all sorts of goodies -
  12. shareware disks, magazine cover disks, new packages and the like,
  13. and you were creating your own data in the form of letters,
  14. spreadsheets etc. Your floppy disk collection started to grow and
  15. your hard disk seemed to be shrinking!
  16.  
  17. Struggling for room on your hard disk you decided a clear up was in
  18. order, and with the benefit of an archiving tool, another box full
  19. of floppy disks and some drastic pruning you managed to make some
  20. free space on your hard disk.
  21.  
  22. Unfortunately now you haven't a clue what floppy contains what
  23. files and the time it takes to do anything is growing. You are also
  24. fairly sure most of your floppies are only half full, but there is
  25. little you can do about it except accept the waste and buy another
  26. box.

  28. If this sounds like you, don't worry, you aren't alone, and a
  29. solution is at hand -

  31. SMARTCAT for WINDOWS - Bringing order to chaos.
  32.  
  33. SMARTCAT is a sophisticated new floppy disk management system for
  34. the Microsoft Windows operating environment. SmartCat was designed
  35. from the start as a Windows application, not a conversion of a Dos
  36. product. It makes full use of all the features of Windows to
  37. provide power and extensive functionality with the ease of use and
  38. familiar style of operation that the environment allows.

  40. With SmartCat you can effectively manage your floppy disk
  41. collection, improve your productivity, reduce media wastage,
  42. simplify the use of archive tools and much much more. You will be
  43. putting yourself back in control of your data and allowing your
  44. creativity and talents the time to be effective.

  46. SmartCat's Features
  47.  
  48. Some of SmartCat's advanced features include:-
  49.  
  50. Full Windows MDI support, allowing the user multiple views of
  51. catalog data.
  52.  
  53. Virus scanner interface. SmartCat can optionally automatically call
  54. a virus scanning program before cataloging disks.
  55.  
  56. Multiple drive support. Both floppy and hard disks can be
  57. cataloged.
  58.  
  59. Archive support, for the ZIP, ARC, LZH, PAK and ARJ archive
  60. formats. Archive files can be analysed when a disk is cataloged and
  61. the internal files recorded.
  62.  
  63. Windows association support, where a file which is associated with
  64. a particular application can automatically cause the application to
  65. start with the selected file as its input (the same as
  66. 'double-clicking' a file which has a specified association while in
  67. File Manager).
  68.  
  69. Support for multiple discrete catalogs, and the ability to merge
  70. them for searching, reporting or statistical purposes.

  72. File processing support. Once you have found a particular file you
  73. probably want to do something with it! Smartcat makes it easy to do
  74. almost anything with a file including copying it, moving it,
  75. deleting it, renaming it, running it (if it's executable),
  76. processing it (if it's associated with a particular application),
  77. extracting it if archived, exploding it if it itself is an archive
  78. or printing it. If the file is in an archive it will automatically
  79. be extracted first if appropriate to the requested operation. And
  80. if there is something that you want to do with a file that is not
  81. in the list you can probably achieve it with the user extensibility
  82. feature!

  84. User extensibility. SmartCat allows extension of its file
  85. processing features with the provision of seven "user buttons" the
  86. text and action of which the user can configure himself. As
  87. delivered the caption of the first "user button" is set to "VIEW"
  88. and pressing it causes the NOTEPAD program to start with the
  89. specified file as its input. The second user button is set to
  90. "SCAN" and is configured to call McAfee's Virus scanning
  91. program.The other six buttons are set to "USER2" - "USER7", and
  92. when pressed initiate the WRITE program. As with all other file
  93. processing support if the file in question needs extracting from an
  94. archive first then SmartCat will do so.

  96. User configurability. Certain parameters are modifiable by the user
  97. to accomodate different working approaches. In particular
  98. configuration of the options of the archive extraction utilities
  99. accomodates different requirements.

  101. Sophisticated searching capabilities. SmartCat fully supports Dos
  102. Wildcards when searching for files. Additionally, more complex
  103. searches can be requested by the specification of ranges of
  104. filedates and filesizes in addition to filenames.

  107. Sorting support. SmartCat allows sorting of all lists of files,
  108. however produced, in a number of useful orders.
  109.  
  110. Full ClipBoard support. Any list of files produced from analysis of
  111. the catalog can be copied to the Windows ClipBoard, in the sort
  112. order requested by the user.
  113.  
  114. Reporting capabilities. Any list of disks or files generated can be
  115. printed on request.

  119. Maintaining the Catalog
  120.  
  121. Cataloging a disk is requested from an option in the "Maintain"
  122. Menu. A dialog box appears which allows specification of the drive
  123. to use,  what to do if an unlabelled disk is presented for
  124. cataloging (SmartCat can optionally write a volume label to
  125. unlabelled disks before cataloging), whether to analyse the various
  126. archive formats, and whether to display each file as it is
  127. presented.

  129. Updating a disk presents a similar dialog, and SmartCat will check
  130. the disk label to ensure the correct disk is inserted.

  132. Deleting a disk is a simple menu option, with a confirming query.
  133.  
  134. There is also the option to renumber a disk in the catalog.

  136. Viewing The Catalog
  137.  
  138. Viewing the contents of the catalog is a simple matter of scrolling
  139. up and down the catalog list, which displays the disks you have
  140. cataloged in the order you choose. You can choose to arrange the
  141. disks in Name,  Number,  FreeSpace or Date order.
  142.  
  143. Statistics detailing the content of the catalog are easily
  144. obtained.

  146. To view the contents of a disk all that is required is a
  147. "double-click" on that disk in the catalog window.
  148.  
  149. Searching the Catalog
  150.  
  151. There are two options for searching the catalog, a simple search
  152. and a complex search. The simple search option brings up a dialog
  153. box which accepts a filname pattern to search for. Standard Dos
  154. Wildcards are accepted, giving a range of search options, from a
  155. specific file (e.g. LOTUS.WK1), to all PCX files (*.PCX) etc.

  157. The result of the serach is displayed as before in an MDI child
  158. window.

  160. A request for a complex search produces the following dialog box
  161. which allows the specification of filename pattern (as before)
  162. and/or minimum and maximum filesizes, and earliest and latest
  163. filedates. The result of the search again appears in an MDI child
  164. window.
  165.  
  166. A view of the internal components of archive files is also
  167. available as a selection from the View Menu.

  169. I've found the file, now I want to do something with it!
  170.  
  171. Once a required file has been located, a simple "double-click" on
  172. it (or selecting "process file" from the "maintain" menu) displays
  173. a dialog box from where the user is presented with 16 actions (7 of
  174. which are user defineable) for further processing the file. Option
  175. are only available if appropriate.

  177. Window Management and Help
  178.  
  179. As usual with an MDI based application all the normal Window
  180. Management options exist under the "Window" menu, including the
  181. usual Cascade, Tile, Tile on Top (Windows 3.1 only) and Arrange
  182. Icons options. Some additional options are also available to allow
  183. manipulation of "Classes" of  Window (i.e. all Search windows).
